100周年記念式典原稿
“The Next 100”
On May 1st, 2022, my high school, Chiba Prefectural Nagasa High School, celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding. As current students enrolled at the school, the 100th anniversary presented us with an opportunity to reflect on the history of our school, appreciate the school we have now, and look to the future. As for the history of Nagasa High School, the school has a rich history, established as an educational center in southeast Chiba. Moreover, the marking of the 100th anniversary presented my classmates and I with opportunities to work together to celebrate the occasion. As a graduating third-year student, this was especially meaningful, allowing me another chance to appreciate the bonds of friendship with my classmates.
As for opportunities to think about the future, my fellow third-year students and I were tasked with giving a presentation about SDGs. SDGs are sustainable development goals, which are internationally set goals for creating a sustainable and better world by 2030. Composed of 17 goals and 169 targets, they vow to “leave no one behind” on Earth. In that process, my classmates and I became most interested in the fifth goal, “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.”
Later on, in my personal research, I discovered that achieving gender equality is not as simple as gaining equality for women and girls. In the LGBTQ+ community, besides those who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual, there are people who do not necessarily conform to the male-female dichotomy, including transgender, non-binary, queer, and so on. Some research indicates that about 8.9% of the world population, or 1 in 11 people, identify as LGBTQ+. After doing some simple math, I realized that in a class of 40, on average, 3 or 4 students could identify as LGBTQ+. This statistic snapped me back to the present. Was it possible that I had 3 or 4 classmates who identify as LGBTQ+, without me even knowing? Was it possible that I said or did something that hurt my friends, or made them feel uncomfortable, without even realizing it? My classmates are so precious to me, regardless of their identity.
How could it be possible that I would have classmates that identify as LGBTQ+, without me even knowing? The sad truth is that these groups are often marginalized in our society, and lack rights that we take for granted. For example, a gay couple cannot list one another as an emergency contact, even in a life-or-death situation. Gay marriage has yet to be legalized here in Japan. People are forced to identify legally as either male or female. These people who identify with these groups cannot love freely or legally, nor identify the way they wish. We have yet to achieve equality of the sexes. In order to meet the SDGs and become a more inclusive society, I believe it is important to legalize gay marriage and legally recognize people with different identities. Only in this way can not only women and girls, but also LGBTQ+ gain equal rights.
As students, we may not yet have the power to change society all at once, but there are some vital things that we can do. First of all, it is important for us to gather correct and relevant information, which we can do by asking our teachers. If we have LGBTQ+ friends, we can ask them for input. After we gather this information, we should share it with the general public, through posters, media, etc. In addition, when we turn 18 years old, we can vote for the candidates who support establishing a legal system that is inclusive to all. Most importantly, it is important for us to let LGBTQ+ people know it is okay to exist, by creating an environment where they can come out and be themselves. I think it is our generation’s mission to end the era of hurting someone by using "I didn't know" as an excuse.
A lot has changed in the last 100 years since Nagasa High School was founded. Japan as a country has changed a lot. The world as a whole has changed a lot. However, when it comes to equality based on gender, sexuality, or identity, there is still a lot of work to be done. I, for one, am optimistic that in another 100 years, we will create a planet where no one is left behind.
